Murders and assaults between gangs were also rife. One key player was the notorious Al Capone. Since his youth he was involved in street gangs. In 1920 he joined a street gang in Chicago. Johnny Torrio was the leader. In 1925 Torrio retired to Brooklyn after being seriously injured in an assassination attempt and Al Capone became the leader. The gangs main port of business was selling illegal alcohol but the gang was also adamant in taking down its’ rivals. On February 14th 1929 Capone was in Miami. He organised for members of his gang to sneak into the warehouse of the Moran gang to kill the leader who was Capone’s main rival. Al Capone’s men were disguised as police, and Moran, thinking it was going to be a raid, fled. Al Capone’s men shot and killed seven of the Moran mob.
Capone was eventually arrested for his many crimes in May 17, 1929 and served his sentence at the U.S Penitentiary in Atlanta and at Alcatraz.
